The media at large isn’t great for increasing self-esteem. The minute we open up instagram or pinterest, or we turn on the tv, or we open a magazine we are confronted with pictures of what we should look like but probably never will.
90% of the time they pass me by- I can go “Oh my god you can see her ribs!” or “That’s definitely a wig, no one’s hair is that thick and shiny” or simply be fine with the fact that I would rather have the life I have than trade in all my hobbies for the gym and hair salon. But every now and then there is a horrible niggly day where I look at the unachievable photos and feel bad for not looking that way.
I usually deal with this by 1) reminding myself of all the normal photoshop, plastic surgery, camera angles malarky and 2) relaxing and watching something great on my laptop.
HOWEVER, seeing as TV can also come under the umbrella of unachievable and unrealistic there can be shows which will make you feel 100x worse. I’m looking at you America’s Next Top Model. Here is my definitive list of tv shows you can watch when you’re feeling a little subpar on the self-esteem front.
This should frankly be compulsory viewing for all females in my opinion. I completely admit that I’ve only seen the first few seasons but what I have seen I love. Yes, the show is filled with beautiful girls but each girl completely owns her own look and style and each of the characters acknowledges that. There’s no sense that looks define character in this show and it has such a good trickle down feeling. After watching this show for the first time it really made me realise how judgey my self-conscious is- of me and others. This show is the perfect reset button for that bitch who lives in the back of your head giving people the side eye. WE NEED MORE SHOWS LIKE THIS!
I love this one because it’s just a little reminder that you shouldn’t feel bad about enjoying food. Food is bloody great and should be savoured and enjoyed. And who better to remind you of that than two majestic old Italian men who take scenic trips around Italy and provide constant non-stop joy. Technically it’s a cookery show, but I think the actual recipe bit takes up about 2 minutes of the whole show and the rest of the episode is just their adorable friendship.
This is a bit of a left field one. It’s about plastic surgery so yeah there are gonna be some crazy perfect bodies but! None of that matters because it’s all about the transformation. Basically, the premise is that people go on the show when they’ve had botched plastic surgeries and then these two ridiculously LA plastic surgeons fix them. And it always looks so great. And instead of being at all jealous you’re just rooting for them from the sofa because you KNOW how hard it’s been living with that nose and you know that it’s really been affecting Debbie’s self-esteem and NOW her marriage and… you’re just so proud of everyone.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
OITNB is the best for this. You know every now and then when a scene is set in the shower rooms and you get a quick flash of some naked woman? Except she’s not a model she’s just a naked women and you’re reminded that normalness is great. Yeah, love that. Also, it’s just a bangin show. I’ve just started watching the fourth series and my flat mate (who has already binged his way through it) keeps telling me how epic the ending is. Excited!
This is the funniest show I’ve seen in awhile. If you’re after a shortish easy to watch show which will make you snort your mint tea all over your laptop with such force that the trackpad breaks (true story) this is the one for you. That’s how great it is, it broke my laptop and I still love it.
PARKS AND REC
Goes without saying. There are very few shows which feature women as the main roles and yet don’t put any attention on their appearance. For example, I love The Good Wife but a lot of the very initial charm of that show is the catcalls of “Oh my god, Alica is so fiiiit!” “How does she get her hair like that!?” “God she dresses so well, I bet that hoody costs like $200” (It was actually $395, I checked). It’s kind of a thing that even when a show has strong women they have to look a billion times better than their male equivalent.
That’s one of the many reasons I love Parks and Rec. Yes, there are main characters who are women but it’s no biggie that they are women. You don’t particularly notice what they’re wearing, all you notice is how hilarious they are and how they’re doing things right. I love that.
